Luxury in the Future Lies in Its Background

When choosing something,
I used to judge it by
its beauty, usefulness,
price, and value

But as I have grown older,
alongside those things,
I have come to value
where and how it was made

I was fascinated by the fact that
astronomical observation was already being practiced in 1255,
and by the sensibility of reflecting the sky onto the earth

An art book by an artist I deeply admire
The binding was filled with
the artist’s own attention to detail,
and I heard that each copy
had been bound by hand
When I learned the meaning behind its title,
every detail of the cover and the pages
suddenly appeared vivid to me

Before knowing, and after knowing,
I realized that the value I had once felt
was only a single surface aspect

Everything we hold in our hands
is shaped by layers upon layers of background
